Dr Jacinta Poulton

I've been a chiropractor for over 30 years, and I still find the work genuinely interesting. Every patient who comes through the door has a different history, a different body, a different reason for being in pain. My job is to work out what's going on — not just prescribe the same treatment to everyone.

I graduated from RMIT in 1989 and have been based in Templestowe since I opened Momentum in 2011. In that time I've worked with thousands of patients — weekend runners, office workers, tradies, retirees, kids, high-level athletes. The range keeps you sharp.

What I've found over three decades is that most musculoskeletal problems have a mechanical cause that, when you address it properly, responds well to conservative care. You don't always need surgery. You don't always need long-term medication. You often just need someone to work out what's actually driving the problem and treat that — consistently, over an appropriate period of time.

I co-manage complex cases with GPs, physios, rheumatologists and other specialists when that's what's needed. And I work hard to make sure patients understand what's going on with their own body — because that always leads to better outcomes.

What makes Momentum different

Three things patients consistently tell us matter most when they're choosing a chiropractor.

Experience that matters

Graduating from RMIT's chiropractic programme in 1989 gave me a strong foundation. But it's the 35 years of practice since then that really shapes how I work. I've seen acute disc injuries in 25-year-olds and degenerative cervical conditions in 80-year-olds. I've worked with competitive athletes and people who just want to get through the day without pain.

That breadth of experience means I'm rarely seeing something for the first time — and that makes a real difference in how quickly I can work out what's going on.

Genuinely integrated care

Momentum is unusual in the Manningham area in combining chiropractic care, low-level laser therapy and clinical Pilates under one roof — all delivered or prescribed by me. There are no handoffs, no miscommunication, no conflicting treatment plans from different practitioners who've never compared notes.

Each modality is chosen based on what your assessment shows. The three work together in a way that, for many patients, produces better results than any single approach would.

Part of this community

Momentum has been here since 2011 and built its reputation the slow way — one patient at a time, through actual clinical results. I'm a TAC and WorkCover registered provider, I accept Medicare EPC referrals, and I work with all major private health funds.

What you can expect from a consultation

The first thing I do with every new patient is listen. I want to understand the full picture — not just where it hurts right now, but how it started, what makes it better or worse, what you've already tried, and what your life looks like day to day. Pain doesn't exist in a vacuum.

From there I do a proper clinical assessment — postural analysis, movement testing, orthopaedic and neurological testing as indicated. I want to understand the mechanical cause of the problem, not just confirm what hurts. Once I know what I'm dealing with, I explain it in plain English before we talk about any treatment. Patients make better decisions about their health when they actually understand what's going on.

Treatment at Momentum usually combines some mix of spinal adjustment, soft tissue work, laser therapy and prescribed exercise — not because that's a standard formula, but because most musculoskeletal problems involve more than one tissue type and respond better when you address them all. The specific combination, and the intensity of each, depends on what the assessment shows and how your body responds.

I also spend time on what patients can do between appointments — home exercises, activity modifications, ergonomic changes. What happens in the clinic matters, but so does the other 23 hours of the day. And when a case needs input I can't provide — imaging, specialist review, co-management with a GP or physio — I refer. The patient's outcome is always the priority.
